Hard men assemble

From past and distant armies

Strange suits dark glasses

They stand as he passes

Silent in their grief

RIP Matthew Lambert

The bagpipes lament

Corellas sweep out of the gums

Wheeling over him

Muffled drum and rifle crack

In the cold blue gold coast sky

As the days lengthen

Across devastated plains

The first signs of spring

Aftermath

Down near the Harbour

Dark shadows harsh cries echo

A murder of crows

Black lace fell slowly

From her distant shoulder

Still the years went by

Desert tree

The desert tree bloomed

With pots, pans, coloured blankets

Safe in its branches

On the ground tea and sugar

The Bedouin’s fireside gift

Scars

Now they all applaud

Those who have walked in harm’s way

Love washing away

Some of the distant horror

Lurking still in their dreaming
